Woran wird der Wert der Kunst gemessen?

«Der Hauptfeind der Kreativität ist der gesunde Menschenverstand» soll Pablo Picasso einmal gesagt haben. Kunst ist nicht zweckmässig, sie verfolgt keine Funktionalität. Woran soll ihr Wert also gemessen werden? Es ist auch nicht der Aufwand oder die Herstellungskosten, der den Preis bestimmt. Laut Jörg Rössel, Soziologe an der Universität Zürich sind es die Akteure der Kunstszene, die ein Objekt zu Kunst machen. Sie schreiben ihm Eigenschaften zu, welches es als Kunstwerk ausweist.

Kunstkritiker, Historiker, Galleristen, Kuratoren, Museumsdirektoren bewerten das Schaffen der Künstler – sind sie sich einig, gilt ein Objekt als Kunst. Dabei spielen Zufall und Subjektivität eine grosse Rolle – wird die zukünftige Laufbahn von Studenten an einer Kunstakademie von Kennern vorausgesagt, liegen diese nur selten richtig. Bereits einige Studien haben sogar bewiesen, dass die Beurteilung von Kunstobjekten in puncto Qualität und Ästhetik mehrheitlich dem Zufall unterliegt.

Kapitalismus macht vor Kunst keinen Halt

Was ist es also dann? Wie in jedem kapitalistischen Markt sind es auch hier Angebot und Nachfrage, welche den Preis bestimmen – was gefragt ist, ist teuer. Qualität ist dabei sekundär, wenn eine Idee begeistern kann und wenn Kunst potente Käufer und Anhänger findet.

Der Preis der Kunst

Doch Kunstwerke sind keine Ware. An der Kunst zählt nicht die Funktionalität, nicht das Geschäft, sondern die Botschaft. Eigentlich.

Heutzutage wird Kunst mehrheitlich als Investition mit Hoffnung auf Gewinn angesehen: Kaufen – Halten – Verkaufen. Dadurch entwickelt sich Kunst zunehmend eine gewisse «Konsumästhetik». Die Betrachtung von Kunst geht heute in die Richtung einer Investition, das meint Ulli Seegers, Professorin für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Düsseldorf.

Globale Vernetzung des Kunsthandels

Schätzungen zufolge können 95% der Künstler nicht von ihrer Kunst leben. Dies liegt unter anderem daran, dass sich in der Kunstszene einige «Global Players» herausgebildet haben, die über das Label «gute Kunst» und ihren Wert bestimmen.   

Bernard Arnault, Charles Saatchi, Francois Pinault: Unter anderem steuern sie die Kunstwahrnehmung mit ihren finanziellen Mitteln, Sammlungen und Auktionshäusern. Die Künstler, die von ihnen unterstützt werden, erlangen weltweite Berühmtheit und profitieren davon. Durch das Monopol, das einige wenige auf dem Kunstmarkt innehaben, werden die Angebote in Auktionskatalogen immer ähnlicher. Während der grösste Teil der Kunstschaffenden nichts verdient, werden die Werke einiger weniger in Millionenhöhe gehandelt.

Was hat I LAUGH YOU damit zu tun?

I LAUGH YOU! beginnt als unbekanntes Kunstprojekt, das deswegen wie bereits erklärt nicht weniger hochwertig ist. Wird das Projekt aber durch einen Hype bekannt und werden viele Bilder verkauft, steigen auch diejenigen ein, die es als Prestige- oder Investitionsobjekt ansehen. Zum Schluss werden die am wenigsten attraktiven Bilder übrig sein.

Was ist Pop-Art?
Der Begriff tauchte Mitte der 1950er in New York und London auf und zeichnete sich durch die Darstellung einfacher, alltäglicher Objekte und intensiver Farbkombinationen aus. Oft wurden auch Güter der Massenproduktion, Fotos von Filmstars sowie Comicbilder verwendet. Der Begriff Pop-Art wurde nicht wie vielleicht erwartet von Andy Warhol erfunden, sondern durch Lawrence Alloway (Kunstkritiker und Kurator, 1926-1990) geprägt. Er wollte damit eine neue Form der «populären» Kunst, kurz Pop-Art, beschreiben.

Pop-Art: Die bekanntesten Künstler
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) ist wohl der geläufigste Name, wenn es um Pop-Art geht. Sein Schaffen beinhaltete Malerei, Bildhauerei und Medienkunst, wobei seine bekanntesten Werke «Marylin» und Campbell’s Soup Cans Siebdrucke waren.
Ein weiterer prägender Künstler der Pop-Art, Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) war für seine von Comics und Zeichentrickfilmen inspirierten Werke bekannt. Seine bekanntesten Werke «Drowning Girl» und «Whaam!» entstanden beide 1963.

“The American Supermarket”
Bezeichnend dafür, was Pop-Art darstellt, war die Kollaboration “The American Supermarket” verschiedener Pop-Art-Künstler wie unter anderem Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns und Roy Lichtenstein. 1964 wurde der Supermarkt als Teil der Bianchini Gallery in New York eröffnet. Konservendosen, Putzmittel, Hot Dogs, Gemüse – es gab alles, was es auch in anderen Supermärkten gab. Nur waren die Produkte in Wirklichkeit Kunst und wurden zu inflationären Preisen verkauft. Die Banalität der in der Pop-Art dargestellten Objekte verschob deutlich die Zuordnungsmuster der Kunst.

Im Internet berühmt werden, das wollen viele. Schon lange wird das Internet von vielen für Verkaufs- und Werbezwecke benutzt. Vor 15 Jahren machte sich Andrew Tew dies zunutze und startete das Projekt 1 Million Pixel Homepage, um sich sein Studium zu finanzieren. Vom Studenten zum Millionär – und das mit 21 Jahren!

Andrew Tew ist im Jahre 2005 gerade 21 Jahre alt und Student an der Universität von Nottingham. Er braucht eine Idee, wie er sein Studium finanzieren könnte. Denn bereits bevor er mit dem Business-Management Lehrgang beginnt, ist sein Konto überzogen. Es muss schnell Geld her.

Der “Get-Rich-Quick-Plan”

Sein Gedanke: eine Website ausschliesslich für Werbeanzeigen zu erstellen, auf der die Werbetreibenden für ihre Anzeige Pixel kaufen müssen. Insgesamt stehen 1 Million Pixel zum Verkauf, für eine Anzeige müssen mindestens 10×10 Pixel für 100 Dollar gekauft werden.

Zuerst durch Unterstützung seiner Familie und Freunden, dann durch eine Pressemitteilung erreicht das Projekt rasend schnell Berühmtheit. Nach nur fünf Monaten waren alle Pixel verkauft und Andrew Tew frischgebackener Milionär.

Ein einzigartiger Erfolg

Nachdem das Projekt so hohe Wellen schlägt, werden auch viele Nachahmer auf den Plan gerufen. Tew selbst versucht ebenso auf dem Erfolg aufzubauen und beginnt, weitere Websiten nach demselben Prinzip zu betreiben. Der Erfolg der One Million Dollar Page soll aber unvergleichbar bleiben. 

One Million Pixel Homepage als Inspiration für I Laugh You!

Auf I Laugh You! werden keine Pixel verkauft, auch ist das Projekt etwas komplexer aufgebaut. Die One Million Pixel Homepage diente aber unter anderem als Inspirationsquelle. Die Idee einer webbasierten Verkaufsidee, bei der viele Einzelteile verkauft werden wurden auf das Kunstgewerbe übertragen. Jeder kann ein Teil dieses Projektes werden und gewinnt dazu noch eine vielversprechende Wertanlage, genauso wie die Werbetreibenden der One Million Dollar Homepage durch die mediale Aufmerksamkeit an Zulauf gewannen.

Eine Hommage an die grosse Liebe

Vor zehn Jahren versuchte mein jüngeres Ich das grösste Bild der Welt zu erschaffen. Es sollte eine Hommage an meine damalige Freundin sein. Dazu verwendete ich Ölfarbe sowie viele andere Materialien und verschanzte mich in einem dunklen Keller.

Das höchstauflösende Bild seiner Zeit

Nach einem halben Jahr dort unten wurde es Zeit, aus dem entstandenen Gemälde ein hochauflösendes Bild zu machen. Wahrscheinlich war es sogar eines der höchstauflösenden Bilder zu dieser Zeit. Dafür kaufte ich mir die teuerste Canon Kamera und eine leistungsstarkes Makroobjektiv. Um das Gemälde so hochauflösend zu fotografieren wie geplant, musste ich von dem Bild über 32’000 einzelne Fotos machen. Ich packte das Bild unter eine CNC-Maschine und rasterte das Bild ab. Mit Hilfe eines Freundes führten wir diesen Vorgang zwei Wochen lang Tag und Nacht in Schichtarbeit durch. Dies wäre theoretisch auch mit ein paar Programmzeilen machbar gewesen, zu dieser Zeit hatte ich dieses Wissen aber nicht. Was es mir an Wissen fehlte, machte ich mit Motivation wett.

Stitching – digitales Zusammensetzen eines Ölbildes

Der nächste Arbeitsschritt war das «Stitchen» der Fotografien. Dies geschah am Computer. Wir hatten nämlich von jedem kleinen Bildabschnitt (nur wenige Quadratzentimeter) mehrere Aufnahmen mit unterschiedlicher Tiefenschärfe gemacht. Diese mussten jetzt zusammengesetzt werden, damit ein vollkommen scharfes Bild entstand.

Vergessene Ambitionen und Alkohol

Um die Website zu programmieren, auf der das Projekt präsentiert werden sollte, hatte ich zu wenige Kenntnisse. Zu dieser Zeit fand ich niemanden in meinem Umfeld, der mir dabei helfen konnte. Erschwerend dazu kam, dass meine Freundin mich nach acht Jahren Beziehung verliess. Ich ertränkte mein Leid im Alkohol, die Zeit verging und langsam vergass ich meine Ambitionen und I Laugh You!.

10 Jahre – eine neuer Versuch

10 Jahre später, in einem neuen Leben angekommen, stolperte ich über die 2’000 Gigabyte Daten, die sich damals mit den gestitchten Fotografien angesammelt hatten. Ich dachte mir: Vielleicht sollte ich jetzt damit weiter machen und zu Ende bringen, was vor 10 Jahren nicht möglich gewesen war?

Ich hatte die 10 vergangenen Jahren in verschiedenen Startups gearbeitet und viel Erfahrung im Programmieren gesammelt. Ich war bereit, die Herausforderung anzutreten. Es nahm ein bisschen mehr als 1’000 Stunden Programmieren und Testen in Anspruch, um das Projekt endlich in die Freiheit zu entlassen.

Nun kann ich stolz sagen, das Projekt abgeschlossen zu haben und ich hoffe, jemand da draussen freut sich über den Irrsinn.
